Jezebel was a gorgeous all-black donkey with no white points. We got her from some friends who also breed donkeys because we thought her unique color was so unusual. She was a very friendly donkey with a funny personality.
Jezebel was always plagued with respiratory problems throughout her life. She had a chronic wheeze that we had to treat with antihistamines all summer long. Jezebel often spent the winters sick with a respiratory infection. She always seemed to have trouble breathing. However, as she got older, the problem seemed to get a little better.
When she was four, we bred Jezzie to our jack, Mo. She gave birth to a snow-white jennet foal we named Zena. Zena had basically the same friendly personality as her mom. Jezzie was an excellent mother. She took really good care of her baby even though it was her first.

As winter approached, Jezzie started getting sick again. At the time, I had a horse with an upper respiratory infection and several donkeys that were sick. Jezzie was one of them. Unfortunately, it was a very cold winter and Jezzie developed pneumonia. She got so sick that her lungs were just filling up with fluid and she couldn't breathe. I found her one morning lying down and unable to get up. I called the vet to come out and assist, but before the vet could make it out, she passed away.
Jezebel is buried at Pine Hill Pet and Horse Cemetery in Bowie, Texas.
If tears could build a stairway,
and memories could build a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again....
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
"When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There
are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food
and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are
restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had
to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright
eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to break away from the group, flying over the green
grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally
meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together......."
