1991 - 2005

Sierra was the sweetest little
girl. She came to us back in 1998. My husband at the time worked at
a mechanic's shop and was preparing to change the oil on a car. When he
opened the hood of the car, he was surprised to find a little white kitty
sitting in the engine compartment just as happy as you please. He pulled
the cat out of the engine, completely unharmed and asked the owner of the car if
she belonged to him. She did not, so he put her in his toolbox at the shop
where she sat there for the rest of the day and groomed herself and slept quite
comfortably.
He brought her home and we
decided to keep her. I asked him what model of car it was he had found her
in. He told me it was a Cutlass Sierra so I decided to name her Sierra.
Sierra was quite the inquisitive little kitty. Around here, she earned herself the title of "Supervisor". You see, any time you would be working in the garage, working in the yard, mending fences, etc., she would occasionally stop by to check the progress of your work. She would hang around for a while to keep you company and just to see what you were doing and "supervise" the job for a while then leave. A little later, she would show up again to check on you again to see how you were doing. We would always joke that she was supervising us to make sure we were doing a good job at whatever it was we were working on.
Sierra was a really independent little girl. She was very affectionate and loved to be petted, but it was always on HER terms. She did not like to be picked up and held. In fact, she preferred to curl around your ankles and be petted on the ground. Only in the last 2 weeks before her death did she finally jump up in my lap and sit in my lap for some petting. I actually felt honored that she did this! She did not give out her affections lightly.
Sierra had a very special relationship with our other outside cat Brutus. We got Brutus back in 1991. He is a neutured male tabby who believes he is a lion. He is twice her size and he is a big tough cat. When we introduced Sierra to Brutus, she hissed at him a little, but Brutus just tackled her and began to groom her. Before the week was out, they were sleeping together in the same bed and eating out of the same bowl. Brutus has a little kitty sized dogloo that he sleeps in when it is cold. Both Brutus and Sierra slept together in that dogloo for the last 7 years. It was really sweet. Brutus really misses Sierra now, you can tell that he is looking for her in the morning when I go out to feed him.
Sierra might have been a small cat, but she was tough. We have a lot of donkeys, but she was not afraid to put them in their place. If a donkey got too close to her, she would just hunch down and wait for the donkey to get right on top of her, then she would sink both paws right into the donkey's nose! The donkey would take off running in the other direction!! It was truly a sight to see. She was one tough little girl.
Unfortunately, the one thing
that Sierra should have been afraid of was cars. It seems that Sierra had
taken a fancy to going across the highway to our neighbor's pasture. Any
time I actually saw her doing this I would call her back from the street.
We have 20 acres for her to roam so this was not something she actually needed
to do. The speed limit on the street there is 65 so I knew it was
dangerous for her to be crossing the street. One morning I was leaving for
work and I saw her lying on the end of our driveway. I called out to her
but she didn't move. I jumped out of my car and ran over to her, but she
was already gone. It was too late and there was nothing I could do for
her. Her passion for exploring and her fearless nature around cars was her
downfall.
We took Sierra to Pine Hill Pet Cemetery in Bowie, TX. She was buried on February 15, 2005. Her presence here is sorely missed. She was such a little kitty, but she left a very big hole in our hearts.
If tears could build a stairway,
and memories could build a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven
and bring you home again....
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
"When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There
are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food
and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are
restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had
to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright
eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly she begins to break away from the group, flying over the green
grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally
meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your
hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together......."
